Rodney House Project, Cheltenham
Cheltenham based Architects Messrs. Dyer Associates were
faced with the problem of providing access for the less able,
wheelchair users and refuse bin disposal, to and from a row
of six Georgian Grade II listed buildings, they were being
converted from residential to office use.
Each of three pairs of houses had an existing common flight
of short rise steps with original wrought iron ballustrading.
The responsible architect could not source any form of lift
system that could be incorporated into an aesthetically acceptable
solution that would not detract from the frontages.
An experienced Saxon Sales Engineer was asked by the project
architect to visit their offices and advise on an installation
utilising a hydraulic driven scissor lift, to meet their stringent
design criteria and the requirements of the local authority.
After careful consideration a solution was agreed, which
required the centre of the short rise stairs to be cut away
and two adjacent walls constructed as shown in the photograph,
the wall base was taken to the bottom of a light well and
the civil work allowed for a lift pit 300 mm deep and also
to provide for an area under for a ventilated lockable plant
room enclosure.
The freestanding self-supporting scissor lift platform was
fitted with handrails, gates and upper level ballustrading
specially manufactured to match the existing. Routes for the
electrical conduits etc, were agreed at the design stage and
built in.
The final result was an aesthetically pleasing lift installation.
